On July 1, 2025, Silicon Valley-based startup Lyten announced plans to fully acquire Northvolt Dwa ESS, Europe’s largest energy storage system (ESS) factory, in a move to expand its product line.

Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in March of this year, marking one of Sweden’s largest corporate insolvencies and effectively shattering Europe’s hopes of building a competitive rival to Chinese battery manufacturers. The company had announced the closure of the factory in November last year.

Lyten CEO and co-founder Dan Cook stated in a release, “We plan to immediately restart operations in Poland and deliver on existing and new customer orders.”

The 25,000-square-meter (269,000-square-foot) ESS production and R&D facility, located in Gdańsk, Poland, commenced operations in 2023.

According to Lyten, the plant is equipped with machinery capable of producing up to 6 GWh of energy storage capacity, with potential expansion to 10 GWh. The company has also secured contracts extending through 2026.

The deal, expected to close in Q3, has not disclosed financial terms.
