A senior executive of BYD Brazil has revealed that the Chinese automaker is scaling up battery production in the country as part of its broader push to deepen local manufacturing footprint. Separately, BYD plans to invest approximately $100 million (US) in building energy storage systems to support Brazil’s national power grid.

Alexandre Baldy, Senior Vice President of BYD Brazil, said in an interview on June 15 that the capacity expansion is part of the company’s overall localization strategy, which aims to raise the share of locally sourced components in Brazil-built vehicles to 50% by early 2027.

In addition, BYD will invest between 50 million and 60 million reais to expand its dedicated battery production line for public buses. Brazil is set to hold its first tender for large-scale industrial battery storage projects this December.

Over the next 90 days, BYD will finalize the site selection for its energy storage production line: either by adding new capacity at its existing Manaus plant, which currently produces batteries for buses, or by securing a new plot of land for a dedicated facility. BYD has previously secured mining rights in several lithium-rich areas of Brazil, but amid persistently low lithium prices, the company has no immediate plans to develop those deposits.

BYD stated in an announcement that the investment will be carried out in phases and “gradually increased.” The company emphasized that such batteries hold significant application value in Brazil, given the country’s “regional power generation imbalances” and the dominance of energy-intensive economic sectors such as mining and agriculture.

BYD noted that this investment represents the largest-ever commitment in Brazil’s domestic energy storage battery sector, with production capacity to be flexibly adapted to meet demand across Latin American markets. Having operated in the Brazilian market for over a decade, BYD had cumulatively sold more than 200,000 pure electric and hybrid vehicles in the country as of 2025.
