On July 8, 2026, Peak Energy, a stationary energy storage startup, has announced plans to build the first sodium-ion battery storage system factory in the United States, located in California. The facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 4 GWh and is slated to commence operations in the first quarter of 2027. The company has already secured over 6 GWh of non-binding customer orders.
According to Peak Energy, the sodium-ion storage system incorporates passive cooling technology, which reduces the total cost of ownership over the system’s full lifecycle by 20%. The system is designed to guarantee 99% uptime and is primarily targeted at data centre backup and storage applications.
Notably, Peak Energy was founded in 2023 with a mission to develop low-cost, GWh-scale storage products tailored to address the unique challenges of the US power grid. Its core founding team comprises industry veterans from Tesla, Enovix and Fluence.
The company currently holds a total order pipeline exceeding $1 billion (US), with project partners including Jupiter Power, RWE and Energy Vault. In June 2026, Peak Energy entered into a strategic partnership with General Motors, under which GM will co-fund the development of sodium-ion battery technology for grid-scale storage applications.
