On October 21, Mercedes-Benz announced the opening of its first battery recycling plant in Europe that utilizes an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process. This makes Mercedes-Benz the first automotive manufacturer to achieve battery recycling loops through its own internal facilities.
The total investment in the plant reaches tens of millions of euros, and the plant is capable of recycling over 96% of used batteries annually, converting 2,500 tons of recycled materials into more than 50,000 battery modules for new all-electric Mercedes-Benz models.
The facility employs an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process to decompose, separate, and recycle battery materials. This method, characterized by low processing temperatures, consumes less energy and is powered by green electricity generated from a PV system installed on the roof of the plant.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, stated that the plant marks a key milestone towards enhancing raw-materials sustainability. “Together with our partners from industry and science, we are sending a strong signal of innovative strength for sustainable electric mobility and value creation in Germany and Europe.”
