Rio Tinto and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formally marking the beginning of a strategic partnership between the two industry leaders. The collaboration is structured around three core areas: the development of electrification strategies and related technological innovations, the integration of supply chains with circular economy initiatives, and the establishment of commercial and cooperative frameworks. Together, the companies seek to capitalize on emerging opportunities arising from the global transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The MoU was signed by Jamie Sanders, Group Procurement Officer of Rio Tinto, and Haining Luo, President of the International Investment Management Department at CATL. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Bold Baatar, Chief Commercial Officer of Rio Tinto, and Shu Zheng, Chief Financial Officer of CATL — an arrangement that underscores the high-level commitment and strategic importance both organizations attach to this partnership.
Under the terms of the MoU, the partnership will prioritize several key areas of cooperation. These include advancing the application of electrification technologies across mining operations, exploring commercially viable pathways for battery material recycling and the sustainable management of critical mineral resources, and investigating circular economy models alongside diversified forms of collaboration. In this joint effort, CATL will contribute its extensive expertise in battery technology, systems integration, and new energy solutions to support Rio Tinto in enhancing operational efficiency and making tangible progress toward its carbon reduction and electrification objectives.
With a history spanning more than 150 years, Rio Tinto is a globally recognized leader in the mining and metals sector. Its operations cover the full spectrum of exploration, extraction, and processing of a wide range of mineral resources, including iron ore, copper, aluminum, lithium, and other critical materials essential to the energy transition. Looking ahead, the two companies are committed to jointly developing zero-carbon mining solutions that set a benchmark on a global scale, thereby contributing to the profound transformation of the world’s energy system.
