On August 20, Yomiuri News reported that Panasonic Holdings had reached a final agreement with Subaru and Mazda to establish an electric vehicle battery production base in Japan.
Sources revealed that Panasonic plans to build a new production line for Subaru in Gunma, handling all aspects from battery production to packaging. For Mazda, Panasonic will set up a packaging production line in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi, expected to source battery cells from Panasonic’s Osaka battery plant.
The report also noted that Subaru and Mazda plan to begin full-scale production of electric vehicles before 2030, and the new battery production base will consider utilizing vacant space in Subaru and Mazda’s existing factories.
Currently, Panasonic’s only electric vehicle battery customer is Tesla, and with the slowdown in North American electric vehicle demand leading to reduced Tesla orders, Panasonic’s performance has been affected. IT Home noted that in order to reduce its dependence on Tesla, Panasonic announced in March this year it had reached an agreement with Subaru and Mazda to jointly supply batteries for electric vehicles.
Panasonic currently has only Tesla as its electric vehicle battery customer.
