On February 18, 2026, Japanese battery manufacturer GS Yuasa announced that its “Battery Stable Supply Assurance Program” for the development and mass production of domestically produced energy storage lithium-ion batteries has received official certification from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

The company will invest 70.3 billion yen (approximately $450 million US) to construct a new energy storage battery manufacturing facility north of Tokyo, with an annual production capacity of 2 GWh.

The initiative aims to meet the growing demand for grid energy storage driven by the widespread adoption of renewable energy, reduce dependence on overseas supply chains, and strengthen Japan’s domestic supply system for energy storage batteries.

To support this strategic plan, METI will provide up to 24.8 billion yen (approximately $159 million US) in government subsidies for the project. The funding will primarily be used for infrastructure development at the new production site, as well as the introduction and enhancement of advanced manufacturing technologies.

The project represents a significant strategic investment in the new energy sector for GS Yuasa. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the largest battery production bases in Japan.

According to the company’s roadmap, construction and equipment commissioning will be completed over the next few years, with commercial supply of high-quality domestically produced lithium-ion energy storage batteries scheduled to commence in October 2028.
