On December 3, the European Commission announced it has partnered with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to support investments in the EU’s battery industry, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of Europe’s battery sector.

According to the Commission’s statement, the collaboration will focus primarily on electric vehicle (EV) battery technologies. The European Innovation Fund will provide a total of €1.2 billion (approximately $1.27 billion US), while the EIB plans to invest €1.8 billion (approximately $1.90 billion US).

This initiative is part of a broader €4.6 billion (approximately $ 4.87 billion US) investment plan by the European Commission, which will be used to advance net-zero emission technologies, EV battery manufacturing, and renewable hydrogen development in the coming years.

The European Innovation Fund primarily finances demonstration projects for innovative low-carbon technologies, with an expected expenditure of around €40 billion (approximately $42.31 billion) by 2030. The fund is designed to help achieve carbon neutrality in Europe, with its resources derived from revenues generated through the EU’s carbon emissions trading system. The EU aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
