On March 6, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $25 million investment in 11 projects aimed at advancing materials, processes, machinery, and equipment for domestic manufacturing of next-generation batteries. These projects will develop platform technologies that enhance battery manufacturing capabilities, enabling flexible, scalable, and highly controlled manufacturing processes.

Batteries are critical to next-generation technologies that will improve energy affordability and bolster U.S. energy security and independence. For energy storage at the grid side, these innovations will enhance the resilience of homes and businesses, support the electrification of the transportation sector, and contribute to the success of domestic industrial manufacturing.

“For decades, America has been a leader in battery innovation, and under the Biden-Harris Administration we’ve built a foundation to keep this momentum growing into the next generation,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm when the funding was announced. “The projects announced build on this success, enhancing our national security while delivering jobs for American workers for decades more to come.”

Since President Biden took office, companies have announced more than $140 billion in investments in battery and critical minerals supply chains. Additionally, the DOE recently announced over $3 billion in funding for selected projects to accelerate domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials nationwide. These selected projects will renovate, expand, and establish new domestic facilities for battery-grade critical mineral processing, battery component production, battery manufacturing, and recycling.
