Sunwoda has become Tesla’s fifth global power battery supplier, providing batteries primarily for vehicles produced at Tesla’s Shanghai plant and exported to overseas markets.
Tesla’s current battery suppliers include CATL, Panasonic, LG Energy Solution, as well as EVE Energy and BYD, with the company relying mainly on CATL, Panasonic and LG Energy Solution. CATL supplies LFP battery modules for entry-level and mid-range models, while Panasonic and LG Energy Solution focus on high-end ternary lithium batteries to support Tesla’s high-performance vehicles.
In fact, Sunwoda is a global leader in consumer electronics batteries and has been ramping up its efforts in the power battery sector in recent years. In 2024, the company held a 34.3% share of the global mobile phone battery market, ranking first worldwide for five consecutive years. Li Auto began collaborating with Sunwoda in 2017, and Sunwoda is one of Li Auto’s key battery suppliers. In 2022, Li Auto invested an additional 400 million yuan (around $58.2 million US) in Sunwoda Power, acquiring a 2.14% stake.
Additionally, sources say that Sunwoda Power has secured the battery supply contract for Xiaomi’s third model, codenamed “Kunlun”. A key factor behind Sunwoda winning the Kunlun designation is reportedly its cost advantage. Moreover, the company’s high level of responsiveness has been noted; according to sources, Sunwoda set up a dedicated 30 to 50 person team stationed next to Xiaomi’s automotive office in Shanghai’s Jinqiao area, ready to respond to customer needs at any time.
Overall, Sunwoda stands out in the power battery sector due to its cost competitiveness and comprehensive support capabilities. With the new energy vehicle market becoming increasingly competitive, cost is a significant advantage, and Tesla’s choice of Sunwoda is probably also based on these strengths.
