According to Automotive News Europe, the Federazione Italiana Metalmeccanici (FIM-CISL), the Unione Italiana Lavoratori Metalmeccanici (UILM), and the Federazione Impiegati Operai Metallurgici (FIOM) announced plans to strike against Stellantis on October 18. Just last week, the largest auto union in the US threatened to organize strikes at multiple Stellantis facilities in the country. The Franco-Italian automotive group now appears to be facing challenges in both Europe and North America.

Stellantis was formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group, currently encompassing 14 automotive brands. Data from FIM-CISL reveals a sharp 25% decline in production at Stellantis’ Italian plants in the first half of this year. The union anticipates that Stellantis will produce slightly over 500,000 vehicles in Italy this year, significantly down from last year’s 751,000. Over the past 17 years, the automaker has cut its production in Italy by nearly 70%. Stellantis also produces the Fiat 500e electric vehicle at its Turin plant in Italy, one of the sites where workers plan to strike.

Recently, Stellantis has been undergoing a challenging transformation, attempting to transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles, which has necessitated the shutdown of some gasoline vehicle production facilities.

Additionally, Stellantis has faced criticism from the United Auto Workers (UAW) and American dealers, with the UAW highlighting unfair labor practices and failure to reopen the Belvidere plant in Illinois as promised, threatening strikes at various Stellantis facilities in the U.S.

The Jeep and Ram truck brands, which operate in North America, have been major profit sources for the company, but its North American business has struggled in the first half of this year. Dealers in both North America and Europe have criticized CEO Carlos Tavares for poor management amid significant inventory buildup. On Monday, reports confirmed that Stellantis is searching for a new CEO to succeed Tavares, though the company stated this is part of a normal succession plan, with no immediate plans to replace him.
