On March 19, SK On announced the signing of a battery supply agreement with Nissan Motor. The six-year contract, spanning from 2028 to 2033, will see SK On supply a total of 99.4 GWh of batteries to Nissan.

Based on an average battery capacity of 50 kWh per vehicle, this volume is sufficient to meet the battery demand for approximately 2 million units of electric vehicles.

According to reports, SK On will supply Nissan with high-performance, high-nickel pouch batteries, which will be produced in North America. These batteries will be used in four next-generation electric vehicle models from Nissan, which will also be manufactured at Nissan’s Canton plant in Mississippi, primarily targeting the North American market.

Industry analysts believe that the collaboration between SK On and Nissan once again underscores the strong market demand for high-energy-density, high-nickel, and other diversified battery technologies. Despite the growing adoption of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the European and American EV markets, the premium segment will continue to demand batteries with long battery life.

SK On has already set up two self-owned factories and four joint venture plants in the United States. The two self-owned factories, located in Georgia, have a combined capacity of over 22 GWh. Additionally, SK On has three joint ventures with Ford, two in Kentucky and one in Tennessee, with a total capacity of 129 GWh. Another joint venture with Hyundai, also located in Georgia, has a planned capacity of 35 GWh and is expected to commence production in the second half of 2025.

Once all these facilities are operational and reach full capacity, SK On’s total battery production capacity in the United States is projected to exceed 180 GWh annually.
