On December 29, 2025 – Samsung SDI appears to be making a major strategic shift, as it will begin supplying prismatic LFP batteries for energy storage systems under a new US contract worth over 2 trillion won (approximately $1.39 billion US). By 2027, the company will convert its EV battery production lines in the United States into lines dedicated to manufacturing batteries for energy storage systems.
Headquartered in Michigan, Samsung SDI’s US subsidiary will initiate the production of battery cells for energy storage systems at its manufacturing base in Indiana. Currently, Samsung SDI is repurposing part of the production lines at this facility—originally used for EV battery cells—to manufacture prismatic LFP cells for energy storage. The company stated this move will enable it to better cater to local market demands in the United States.
A Samsung executive stated: “This represents a significant opportunity for Samsung SDI to tap into the US energy storage market with its first long-term supply contract for LFP batteries. By supplying the second-generation Samsung battery container products for the first time to US energy storage projects, Samsung SDI will provide energy storage batteries to American customers, offering not only high performance but also enhanced safety and cost competitiveness. This will help customers achieve stable power supply in the era of renewable energy and artificial intelligence.”
Samsung SDI also emphasized that the company is currently the only non-Chinese manufacturer of prismatic batteries in the United States. It believes this unique advantage will enhance its competitiveness as it expands in the North American market.
In early 2025, at North America’s largest renewable energy exhibition (RE+), Samsung SDI launched its second-generation Samsung Battery Container product, promoting it with the slogan “All Made in USA, mature and reliable technology, ready for full-scale production.” At the same time, Samsung SDI highlighted its contribution to job creation in the United States, stating that it is “committed to enhancing its competitiveness in the US market.”
