Posco Future M, a battery materials subsidiary of South Korea’s Posco Holdings, has entered into a partnership with U.S.-based startup Molten Industries to produce battery anode materials using natural graphite derived from methane gas. The agreement marks a strategic move aimed at reducing reliance on mined natural graphite in the production of anodes, which are critical components for energy storage in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Molten Industries has developed a specialized chemical process known as pyrolysis, which employs resistive heating to break down methane gas into hydrogen and graphite. The company has already established a pilot production facility for graphite using this method in West Oakland, California. Under the terms of the collaboration, the two companies will jointly pursue business opportunities related to the production of graphite from methane. Following the initial production phase, Posco Future M will process the resulting material into spherical graphite suitable for use in battery anodes.

According to Posco Future M, graphite produced from methane contains significantly lower levels of metal impurities compared to conventionally mined graphite. This characteristic greatly simplifies the purification process, which in turn is expected to reduce the overall production costs of anode materials. The partnership highlights a growing trend among battery material manufacturers to explore alternative, more sustainable sources of critical minerals, particularly as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise globally.

By leveraging Molten Industries’ innovative pyrolysis technology and Posco Future M’s expertise in downstream processing, the collaboration aims to establish a more efficient and environmentally conscious supply chain for graphite—a material that remains essential to lithium-ion battery production. The initiative also aligns with broader industry efforts to diversify supply sources and reduce environmental impacts associated with traditional mining operations.

As the electric vehicle market expands, securing a stable and cost-effective supply of high-purity graphite has become a strategic priority for battery manufacturers. This cross-border collaboration between a major South Korean materials firm and an emerging American technology company reflects the increasingly international nature of innovation in the battery supply chain.
