Mercedes-Benz recently announced significant breakthroughs in a new solid-state battery technology developed in collaboration with Factorial, which is expected to increase EV range by 80%.

For years, Factorial has been dedicated to advancing its proprietary solid-state FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology) platform. This summer, the company delivered solid-state batteries based on the FEST platform to Mercedes-Benz, and on Tuesday, it launched its latest groundbreaking product, Solstice.

This new solid-state battery was co-developed by Factorial and Mercedes-Benz, aiming to power the automaker’s next generation of vehicles.

Factorial stated that its sulfide-based system effectively addressed the design issues related to flammable liquid electrolytes found in traditional lithium-ion batteries, while maintaining stability at temperatures exceeding 90℃.

This safer design alleviates the need for heavy cooling systems and helps to lower costs.

The new battery boasts an energy density of 450 Wh/kg, and the company claims that the new technology can significantly enhance EV range while reducing weight, thereby improving overall efficiency.

The company’s goal is to provide future EVs with over 600 miles of driving range, while reducing weight by 40% and shrinking battery volume by 33% compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Factorial anticipates that this solid-state battery will enter production by 2030, marking a significant advancement in EV technology and promising longer range and higher performance for future EVs.
