On January 14, at the opening of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit, the Minister of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology announced that Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as Masdar, is collaborating with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) to construct a massive solar energy storage facility. The total investment in the project is estimated to reach $6 billion (US).

The project is located in the Al Azeezah region of Abu Dhabi. Once completed, it will be the largest energy storage project that combines solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) in the world. With an installed capacity of 5.2 GW (DC) and a 19 GWh battery storage system, the project will utilize innovative technologies to transform renewable energy into baseload power for the first time, ensuring reliable, round-the-clock electricity supply.
