LG Energy Solution (LGES) announced on August 18, 2026 it has officially commenced production at its new battery manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, marking the company’s seventh battery production base in North America. With total investment exceeding $2 billion (US), the plant will produce both energy storage system (ESS) batteries and electric vehicle (EV) power batteries, further expanding LGES’s local supply capacity in the region.
Spanning 226 acres, the Lansing plant is set to achieve an annual production capacity of over 35 GWh at full ramp-up and will employ approximately 1,700 workers, with about 900 currently on site. The facility operates along two distinct product tracks: it produces LFP cells for grid-scale and C&I energy storage applications.
These cells will be delivered to LGES’s US storage division, Vertech, for integration into complete ESS solutions, with Detroit-based utility DTE Energy serving as a downstream customer for the plant’s storage batteries. Separately, the plant manufactures high-energy-density NMC cells exclusively for Toyota, destined for the all-electric 2027 Toyota Highlander, supporting Toyota’s EV supply chain buildout in the United States.
With the Lansing plant now online, LGES operates two production sites in Michigan at Holland and Lansing, with cumulative investment in the state exceeding $5 billion (US) since 2010. By the end of 2026, the company’s Michigan-based workforce is expected to surpass 3,300 employees, positioning LGES among the state’s top employers.
In terms of strategic footprint, LGES plans to establish a total LFP cell production capacity of over 50 GWh in North America by the end of 2026, spanning three wholly owned factories and two joint-venture facilities. By that time, 80% of the company’s global ESS battery capacity will be concentrated in North America, aimed at meeting growing US demand for grid storage and EVs, while also helping downstream customers meet relevant US localization requirements for battery components and materials.
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, called the Lansing plant a major milestone for the company, adding that the batteries produced at the new facility will serve both mobility and US energy infrastructure development, and will continue to strengthen the domestic battery industrial ecosystem in the United States.
