On September 17, Group14 Technologies, the world’s largest producer and supplier of silicon battery materials, announced that shipments of its SCC55™ silicon-carbon composite material have commenced from a joint venture EV plant located in Sangju, South Korea. Group14 has completed deliveries to over 100 EV and consumer electronics (CE) battery manufacturing customers worldwide.

The SCC55™ material allows batteries to charge in just a few minutes and extends battery life by 50% compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Since August, SCC55™ has been produced at the 10GWh facility established in partnership with SK Inc. This month, the first batch of SCC55™ from the joint venture has been delivered to battery manufacturers responsible for supplying over 95% of global battery output, as well as to automotive manufacturers and CE companies.

Battery manufacturers are utilizing this initial output to continue advancing the certification of SCC55™, which is expected to be incorporated into several commercial EV and CE projects starting in 2025. Since 2021, Group14 has supplied SCC55™ to over 100 customers from its initial production facility (BAM-1) in Washington, with SCC55™ from BAM-1 having been used in over two million smartphones.

The joint venture plant, designed and built based on Group14’s modular manufacturing technology, has an initial annual production capacity of 2,000 tons of SCC55™, equivalent to 10GWh, which is sufficient to power approximately 100,000 to 250,000 electric vehicles annually. Group14 and SK Inc. established the joint venture in July 2021 to accelerate global silicon battery production and provide localized manufacturing, greater product safety, and improved resilience to the global battery supply chain.

With commercial shipments now underway from Group14’s BAM-1 facility in North America and the joint venture plant in Asia, Group14 becomes the first and only advanced silicon battery material manufacturer to offer dual-source supply. The BAM-2 facility in Moses Lake, Washington, is expected to add another 4,000 tons of capacity by 2025, bringing the total annual production capacity of SCC55™ materials to over 30GWh.
