On July 23, U.S. graphite anode producer Graphite One Inc. and American EV startup Lucid announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a key collaboration under the newly established “Minerals for National Automotive Competitiveness Collaboration” (MINAC).
MINAC was officially launched on Capitol Hill the same day, with the goal of reducing the U.S. automotive supply chain’s reliance on foreign critical minerals while fostering economic growth. Participants in the launch included Graphite One, Lucid, Alaska Energy Metals, Electric Metals, and RecycLiCo.
MINAC aims to enhance collaboration between automakers and Tier-1 suppliers to accelerate domestic critical mineral development and EV supply chain resilience. High-ranking government officials from Arizona and Alaska also attended the roundtable discussion.
Anthony Huston, CEO of Graphite One, stated: “Graphite One is pleased to be partnered with Lucid via supply chain offtake agreements for both synthetic and natural graphite. With MINAC representing domestic developers of the essential rechargeable battery materials and Lucid as an end-user, this agreement marks a significant step towards creating the fully U.S.-based supply chain that is an indispensable element of U.S. energy dominance.”
In June, Graphite One and Lucid signed a non-binding natural graphite supply agreement, under which Graphite One will supply Alaska-sourced natural graphite to Lucid and its battery suppliers starting in 2028. Backed by this agreement, Graphite One is advancing its Graphite Creek flake graphite project in Alaska, described as one of the world’s largest graphite deposits and the fifth U.S. mining project to be listed. The project targets an annual production capacity of 53,000 to 175,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate over a 20-year mine life.
The company also plans to build an advanced graphite processing and anode material facility in Warren, Ohio (Phase 2), along with a recycling plant for graphite and other battery materials (Phase 3).
