According to the latest data released by South Korean research firm SNE Research, global electric vehicle (EV, PHEV, and HEV) battery installations reached 504.4 GWh in the first half of 2025 (H1 2025), marking a 37.3% year-on-year increase (YoY increase). Chinese battery manufacturers continued to dominate the global market, with six companies ranking among the top ten.

China:
1. CATL maintained its position as the world’s leading battery supplier, with installations soaring to 190.9 GWh in H1 2025, up 37.9% year-on-year.
Not only do Chinese automakers such as ZEEKR, AITO, Li Auto, and Xiaomi rely on CATL batteries, but international giants like Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen also source batteries from CATL, further solidifying its global dominance.
During the restructuring of global supply chains, CATL is accelerating its overseas expansion, with multiple battery plant projects underway, laying a solid foundation for its growing international market share.
2. BYD secured second place globally with 89.9 GWh in installations, surging 58.4% year-on-year—the highest growth rate among the top six players. Leveraging its integrated “vehicle and battery” advantage, BYD has made significant strides, particularly in Europe, where its battery installations surged 313.4% year-on-year to 6.0 GWh in Q1 2025.
While overseas competitors grapple with tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and cost pressures, BYD has successfully penetrated emerging global markets thanks to its strong cost control and diverse product portfolio.
Meanwhile, the combined market share of South Korea’s top three battery firms — LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI — dropped to 16.4%, down 5.4% year-on-year.
South Korea:
1. LG Energy Solution retained third place but saw a 28.9% decline in installations from key clients like Tesla.
2. Samsung SDI’s installation fell 8.0%, impacted by weaker BMW i4 sales and Rivian’s shift to Chinese batteries.
3. SK On performed relatively steadily but still faced market share pressure.
