Recently, research institution EVTank, in collaboration with the EVTank Economics Research Institute, released “Report on the Development of China’s Cylindrical Battery Industry (2025)” (“Report”). According to the Report, global shipments of cylindrical batteries in 2024 reached 12.82 billion units, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.6%. EVTank noted that while the overall shipment growth was modest, the structure of shipments underwent significant changes. Specifically, global shipments of power cylindrical batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) declined by 11% year-on-year, while those for power tools and electric two-wheelers increased by 25.4% and 34.6%, respectively.
In terms of shipment volumes, it revealed that Japanese and South Korean companies continued to dominate the market in 2024. LGES, Panasonic, and Samsung SDI maintained their positions as the top three global players, collectively holding over 50% of market share. EVTank highlighted that the standout cylindrical battery companies in 2024 primarily capitalized on opportunities in Southeast Asia’s small power battery market, the domestic substitution of power tool batteries, and the overseas residential energy storage market.
On the other hand, EVTank pointed out in the Report that Chinese companies are leading the industry in exploring new applications for cylindrical batteries, such as BBUs (Battery Backup Unit), AI robots, eVTOLs, and biomedical devices. Some Chinese firms have already begun mass-supplying cylindrical battery products in these emerging fields. Looking ahead to 2025, EVTank predicts that the automotive 46-series large cylindrical batteries will see a significant increase in volume, which will substantially alter the competitive landscape of cylindrical battery manufacturers. Additionally, the large-scale application and industrialization of full-tab batteries are expected to further reshape the competitive dynamics among existing cylindrical battery companies.
