In the past, energy storage technology was seen merely as a supplementary tool for renewable energy development. However, with the large-scale integration of intermittent energy sources like solar and wind power, storage has now become a core infrastructure for ensuring the stable operation of energy systems.
Recently, SolarPower Europe announced in Brussels the establishment of the European Battery Energy Storage Platform, calling for Europe’s total installed storage capacity to expand tenfold from the current 50 GWh to 500-780 GWh by 2030 — claiming that “failure to achieve this could stall the energy transition.”
This reflects the surging demand for energy storage driven by Europe’s shift to renewables and marks a strategic upgrade in the role of storage within the continent’s energy system.
According to SolarPower Europe’s latest data, utility-scale energy storage installations in Europe surpassed residential storage for the first time in 2024, with new additions reaching 11 GWh — a staggering 206% year-on-year increase — accounting for 49% of total new capacity. Meanwhile, residential storage, once the dominant segment, saw new installations drop to 8.7 GWh, down 27.5% year-on-year, indicating a clear market shift from residential to utility-scale storage dominance.
SolarPower Europe also forecasts that Europe’s total battery storage capacity will reach 29.7 GWh in 2025, with utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) storage driving growth. New installations are expected to hit 16.3 GWh (up 86% YoY) and 3.6 GWh (up 62% YoY), respectively.
Industry experts widely agree that, fueled by policy support and market demand, Europe’s battery storage market is now entering a phase of rapid expansion.
