At the recent Davos Forum, Pan Jian, Co-Chairman of CATL, revealed the company is expected to finalize its plan for the fourth battery factory in Europe later this year. The company also intends to continue to employ the model of establishing a joint venture with automotive manufacturers. This announcement marks a further deepening of CATL’s expansion into the European market.

Currently, CATL operates totally three factories in Europe.

The first factory, located in Germany, is planned with a production capacity of 14 GWh. It has already begun mass production and is currently in the phase of ramping up capacity, with the goal of achieving break-even by the end of 2024.

The factory in Hungary significantly expands production capabilities, with a planned annual capacity of up to 100 GWh. The first phase of construction is progressing as scheduled, with civil engineering already completed and installation of facilities underway. The factory is expected to begin production in the second half of 2025. Notably, the location of the factory is strategically positioned near major customers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis, and Volkswagen, with Mercedes-Benz slated to be the first customer.

The third project, announced in December 2024, is of greater strategic significance. CATL has formed a 50-50 joint venture with Stellantis to build a LFP battery factory. The total investment in the project is €4.1 billion (approximately $4.28 billion US), with plans for production to begin by the end of 2026 and an annual capacity of 50 GWh.
