CALB announced recently that it has signed a contract with Japanese energy storage developer Namchabarwa (ナムチャバルワ). The 380 MWh project will be equipped with CALB’s “ZHI JIU” (Endurance) energy storage batteries, integrated with a liquid-cooling thermal management system and an intelligent BMS, enabling efficient energy storage, smart dispatch, and low-carbon utilization.

This marks the first entry of CALB’s DC-side energy storage systems into the Japanese market, signaling international recognition of its DC-side storage products.

As a global leader in the new energy sector, CALB has been deeply engaged in energy storage for years, with storage now constituting one of its core businesses and key growth drivers.

A look at the company’s business structure reveals a steady rise in the weight of its energy storage segment over the past two years. In 2024, CALB’s revenue from energy storage batteries reached 8.201 billion yuan (around $1.19 billion US), a year-on-year increase of 72.4%, raising its revenue share from 17.6% to 29.6%. The company ranked fifth globally in energy storage cell shipments in 2024. In 2025, revenue from CALB’s energy storage system products and other segments totalled approximately 14.1 billion yuan (around $2.05 billion US), accounting for 31.8% of total revenue and registering robust growth of 71.9%.

CALB’s shift is not merely a result of strategic “betting” but rather a necessary adaptation to an evolving industry landscape.

On one hand, as energy storage has been elevated from a supporting new energy component to a national strategic emerging industry in China, corresponding local policies have been rolled out. Energy storage has become a prerequisite for the green transformation of factories and industrial parks, while the integration of wind, solar, and storage has turned into a core necessity for enterprises aiming to cut costs, boost efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. The resulting demand for peak-shaving has further stimulated the growth of the energy storage market.

Energy storage can significantly enhance the utilization rate of renewable sources such as wind and solar power, contributing to the secure and stable operation of new power systems. Driven by global green trends, demand in China’s electrochemical energy storage market has surged. Data shows that in 2025, China’s energy storage sector achieved leapfrog growth, with cumulative installed capacity exceeding 136 GW, a year-on-year increase of 84%.

On the other hand, the gradual refinement of trading mechanisms allowing energy storage to participate in electricity markets is accelerating the sector’s transition from policy-driven to market-driven growth. As profit models become clearer and profitability steadily improves, the industry is attracting significant capital interest.

Currently, energy storage demand continues to expand under the dual impetus of policy support and improving economics. Given the substantial technological overlap between power batteries and energy storage batteries, along with relatively manageable switching costs, power battery manufacturers are actively expanding into energy storage to build a second growth curve.

To date, CALB has successfully supplied equipment for the largest power station projects in Latin America and South Africa, signed a five-year strategic cooperation agreement with a Turkish enterprise, and joined the supplier lists of several major international developers and grid operators. Meanwhile, EVE Energy has seen its energy storage business become one of its fastest-growing segments, ranking second in China in terms of energy storage project awards in 2025.

Battery companies have emerged as a formidable “new force” that cannot be overlooked within the energy storage industry.
