BYD has revealed plans to invest 500 million reais (about $97.5 million US) in building local manufacturing facilities for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Brazil. The investment will be implemented in phases based on market demand and industrial maturity.
Nelson Stanisci, BYD Brazil’s energy storage business director, said the funds will cover the infrastructure required for local mass production of BESS in Brazil, and the pace of investment will gradually expand with market demand. The company will promote supply chain localization, sourcing as many components as possible locally in Brazil, fostering local suppliers and providing skills training for industrial workers. The new production lines are initially expected to create 300 to 400 direct jobs.
The investment will only be used for BYD’s own capacity construction and will not involve acquiring third-party energy storage assets at present. However, the company has chosen an open cooperation model, joining hands with investors, power utilities and system integrators to build an industrial ecosystem. Parties can assume different roles in project commercial design and engineering implementation.
BYD positions itself as a supplier of technology and equipment, exporting the technical capabilities it has accumulated in battery R&D. Relying on its partner network, it can implement a variety of business models, including energy storage as a service. Financing conditions and contract models vary widely from one energy storage project to another.
BYD is responsible for providing battery technology and hardware equipment, while partners customize commercialization and deployment plans according to customer needs. BYD does not intend to take over the entire project process, but instead to build a cooperative system that allows energy storage solutions to fit more application scenarios and business models.
The specific installed capacity of the new plant has not been disclosed, but the planned production lines can accommodate most of Brazil’s energy storage demand, covering the project volume corresponding to an upcoming power capacity reserve auction. Once completed, the plant can produce energy storage modules and systems needed for projects of different scales, and its products may also reach the entire Latin American market.
